The Airplane Book

When I was in kindergarten we were required to read The Airplane Book daily. Each page had a picture and a line that coincided with a letter of the alphabet. For instance, "Ann ate apples" for the letter A. If we got stuck on a word that we couldn't read, the teacher would help us. Then we would have to stop, and start all over the following day.

I have a huge problem with that technique. I never got past the Q's.

Even at 5, I was an excellent reader. Reading is my passion. I quickly progressed through all of the letters, and darn near read the entire book at the beginning of the school year. Then I got to the Q's. I could read the words. I just couldn't pronounce them. I still remember the line, "The squirrels quarreled." I was 5 years old!! Come on!! It's a tongue twister!

Despite my protests, I never got to finish that stinking book. Every single day during my kindergarten year, I read all the way up to Q and had to stop. To this day I'm still bitter about it. I hate squirrels.
